Whale shark season in Mexico is coming! Every summer from June to September, the coasts of the Mayan Riviera close to Playa del Carmen in México welcome these gentle giants that cross the ocean together in the search of warm waters and food. During the morning they feed on the plankton that stays on the surface and that’s when the magic for humans begins! Whale Sharks (Rhincodon typus) are one of the largest creatures in the sea, they can measure up to 18-20 meters, all of them have a unique pattern that none of the individuals has. Usually they are solitary creatures but during migration season they gather to wonder the caribbean waters in search of food. Like bullsharks, they are too ovoviviparous, which means they lay baby sharks instead of eggs. Their life spam is estimated to last over 70-130 years. Here are some facts you might want to know to consider when you plan this adventure! 1. In México diving with whale sharks is not allowed. First out of protection and second because there is no need because they swim in the surface to eat all the plankton that stays there. Remember too to avoid using sunscreen that is not coral reef or ocean friendly and that touching them is not allowed. 2. How I get there? To start your adventure you will have to take a plane to Cancun, México, located in the south of the country. Then a bus to Playa del Carmen from the airport to your hotel and transportation from our team will pick you up and take you all the way close to Isla Mujeres to take a boat and snorkel with these beautiful creatures. Prepare to swim fast! They are big, fast and hungry ! 3. What to consider? Rainy season! Why would rain be an important factor in this adventure? Well if the night before there’s a big storm, all the rain that falls into the ocean makes the plankton go deeper, and with the plankton the whale sharks too. 4. What’s the minimum age to snorkel with them? Kids that know how to swim can snorkel with this amazing creatures from age 6 5. Are there any languages available? Yes there are!
